There is no place to study quite like the Graduate Theological Union.  Located in Berkeley, California, where the diversity of cultures and faith traditions reflects our own, we are a graduate school offering academic programs in a wide range of fields in theology and religious studies. Founded in 1962 by ecumenical pioneers, the GTU continues to flourish as a haven for interdisciplinary religious thought, study, and practice.  We build bridges among Christian denominations and other faith traditions – and serve as the place where religion meets the world.

Study at the GTU is an ecumenical and interfaith experience. Religious traditions represented here now include Protestant, Catholic, Unitarian Universalist, Greek Orthodox, Islamic, Jewish, and Buddhist—all of us working together for a common mission while maintaining the distinctiveness of our particular communities of faith.

Our curriculum has grown beyond the traditional strengths in Bible, history, theology, and ethics to include the arts, homiletics, liturgical studies, spirituality, and interdisciplinary studies. Students can pursue Ph.D., Th.D., and M.A., programs as well as two additional Ph.D. programs offered in conjunction with the University of California, Berkeley.

Study at the GTU is intellectually challenging and rich in resources. We are blessed with one of the finest theological libraries in the world, distinguished scholars providing unparalleled depth of faculty and course selection, and a close collaborative relationship with our neighboring institution, the University of California, Berkeley. Together, our union forms a diverse, engaged community of critical and creative scholarship.

Whether your vocational path leads to ministry or to scholarship – or to both - you will find this an incredibly exciting place to study. If you have any questions about our degree programs, I urge you to contact our Assistant Dean for Admissions, Kathleen Kook.
